Europolis Game
Trying to fix Europolis in that sense definitely isn't as simple as a straight-forward left or right choice. You can envisage both Libertarian and Socialist solutions to the problem, though the characters in the game do largely seem to favour the latter position.
I agree with you. As I wrote above, I think it's strange that there isn't a more liberatarian alternative. So far Europolis' politics only consist of caricatures of run-of-the-mill choices, it's not the diverse political scene a 'metropolis' (of the size of a whole country) like Europolis' would likely have in my opinion. As for Marta, well communism is a well tried and tested system. It has failed, repeatedly, throughout history.

That, plus Communist governments have a tendency to be very authoritarian, which again, rings alarm bells for me. I'm not going to start any serious talk here, but I guess that I need to explain my views in a few sentences.paragraphs.novels.to properly justify my perception of the in-game politics. I'm left-winged anarchist myself, and I don't think that there was real communism in 20th century. Practically, there are a lot of 'legit' marxism theorists that promote this idea. Also, 'communist gorerment' is not very correct term, because communism implies stateless self-regulated society - but some rudimentary administrative authorities will remain, possibly. There was authoritarian socialistic state in USSR, for example, but it wasn't communistic in many ways. I'm not happy with the fact that a lot of people think about totalitarism, left terrorism, extreme censorship and other shady stuff when they hear the word 'communism', but I can understand where that comes from. And that's why I don't quite like Europolian marxists and their ambiguous revivalism of Soviet symbols (hammer-and-sickle, Lenin image, etc) they want to be associated with.
But Lea&Unity is also not very cute. And what about our right comrades? Let's not talk about sad, very sad things. So.I vote none of the above. As someone dangerously close to the very bottom rung of society, I'd vote Marxist out of sheer, cynical self-interest. In my experience, the right is more than happy to cut into exactly those programs I need to not become a homeless person/be committed in the name of improving the economy or balancing the budget and the centre-left is 'pragmatic' enough to throw a minority like myself under the bus if it means coming to some kind of compromise with the opposite end of the aisle. Also, not a xenophobe.
If Nela's any indication, the Marxist's insistence on ideological purity means they'll never be put into power, but at least I could also trust them to look after the little guy. After hearing the stuff from Baruti about Wolf being secretly supported by corporations though he is anti-corporate in his rhetoric, I'm leaning more toward the political situation in Germany in the 1930's than modern Europe, which also fits with the relatively significant Marxist presence. I find it a little odd that somebody who is anti-immigration would be popular with the corporations (usually they like cheap labor), especially in a place where I'd have thought a lot of corporations would be foreign-owned. But I suppose if they think Unity threatens their interests sufficiently--I'm assuming they share the dominant view that the Marxists have no chance of getting in power--I guess they might support Wolf. Gross seems to be the more obvious choice for the corporations.
You may call me weird, but politics was one part of the game I rather liked. Especially because I could identify the partys in the game and the paralells they show to modern day german partys. Unity as Socialdemocrats of course reminded me of the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany), Gross I guess his party must be mostly like CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) or FDP (Liberal Party of Germany) which means conservative, Wolf reminds me of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) and the NPD (Nationaldemocratic Party Germany). Well we don't have communist parties in germany (actually the communist party of germany was forbidden in the past. There used to be the SED in the GDR of course, but germany has been reunited since 1990). The party most left in germany is Die Linke (The Left), but they aren't communists, infact they were founded by the former PDS (a party which took a few of the former SED members) & the WASD, which was the left wing of the SPD (Socialdemocrats), who split off of them after the SPD decided a few pretty conservative laws. Only thing that is missing, which actually could be needed looking at the current state of Dreamfalls world are the Greens.
